(Translated by Duane Bogenschneider) Leslie Riggle 231 South Morningside Wichita, Kansas 67218-1813 Erika Laabs Ostseestrasse 2, Apt 309 23570 Lübeck-Travenmünde Dear Erika: Many thanks for the telephone call. Martha was in the hospital until the middle of July. Her doctor said that nothing else could be done for her due to the condition of her heart and that she should be taken home. We set up a hospital bed in the recreation room and I had a sofa bed and took care of her. Our daughter, Jeannean, who is a nurse, was here daily and helped very much. The nurses and other hospice workers visited daily, as well as our pastor and sisters from the church. July 31 was her last good day. She had lost her wedding ring and on this day I ordered a new one. That made her very happy. I made some potato puffs and apple sauce. She ate with a good appetite and also drank a little beer. After that, she ate less and less and slept more and more. On Monday, 3 August, she closed her eyes. Jeannean determined that she had no pulse and we contacted the funeral home. The funeral service was in our Reformation church (where we celebrated our golden wedding anniversary in 2003), and she is buried now in my hometown, about 200 kilometers from Wichita. She has the new wedding ring on her finger and is wearing her tracht. This is how we buried her. [This letter arrived this week to the Pommern Central office in Lübeck-Travenmünde.
