Topic: Our 2011 Tour to Pomerania
See the sights we saw on our tour to Pomerania in May 2011. We landed in Hamburg, and then visited Schwerin, Wismar and Rostock in Mecklenburg. In Vorpommern we visited Stralsund, Rügen and Greifswald. In Greifswald we saw the beautiful Croy Tapestry in the splendid new Landesmuseum in Greifswald and visited the Archives. We then toured the capitol city of Stettin, and took side trips to our ancestral villages. We toured Kolberg and had a boat ride on the Baltic Sea, visited beautiful Danzig, toured the mighty Teutonic Knights castle of Marienburg and then toured Berlin.

Topic: German Immigrants in the Civil War
Approximately 200,000 immigrants from the German-speaking states in Europe served in the Federal Army during the American Civil War, and the American-born sons of German-speaking immigrants totaled another 200,000 – 400,000; making up nearly 30% of the force that preserved the Union of the States and shaped the America we know today. Where did they come from? Why did they serve? What obstacles did they face? These questions, and more, will be addressed and sung (yes, sung) with John Thielmann on February 10. Attendees are invited to bring any photos or other artifacts of ancestors who served in the Civil War to share.

Topic: Widow Mary Todd Lincoln
Last year, the PVF was honored to have Eleanor Roosevelt visit with the help of Jessica Michna. This same lady knows Mary Todd Lincoln personally. Join us as she tells of life after the assassination of her husband. Mrs. Lincoln’s life has come full circle as she returns to Springfield, Illinois, to take up residence with her sister, Elizabeth. She recalls the days of her girlhood in Kentucky, her marriage, and eventually her rise to become the First Lady.
